Font Notes:
Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a noteworthy circular baptismal font of the Norman period. Walker (1908) has it as a tub-shaped Norman font re-carved at a later date. Harrison (1920) notes: "the old font with later work carved on it—Tudor rose, fleur-de-lis, etc." Described in Whiteman (1994): "The large, circular font is also Norman with later decoration (fleur-de-lis, foliage and shells) carved in the 16th century". Described and illustrated in the CRSBI (2008): "This is thought to be a 12thc. tub font which was re-carved in the late medieval period. At present it is lifted off the floor by small stone blocks. The interior is circular and lead lined. Heavy roll mouldings at the top and botton of the 'tub' are possibly 12thc., but the rest of the carving (eight motifs, such as leaves and shells, in square frames over a band of billet) is later. Due to a limewash coating the stone could not be definitely identified, but it is probably local sandstone."
