There are four entries for this Burgate [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TM0875/burgate/] [accessed 28 July 2019]; one of the four entries reports "1 church. 0.1 church lands" in it; another "2.3 churches. 0.25 church land" in it. Paley (1844) mentions a baptismal font bearing an inscription here. Described in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 as "a finely sculptured font." Described in Parker (1855): "In the nave is a good D[ecorated] font on two steps; it is octagonal in shape; around the rim is the following inscription: 'Wihl. Burgate. militis. et due. Elionore. uxuris eius. qui istum fontem fieri fecerunt.'. Three words of the inscription are obliterated." Listed in Romilly Allen (1888) as a baptismal font with an inscription giving the name of the donor [NB: R.A. gives the county as Norfolk]. Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period with heraldic ornamentation; an Inscription on the upper step/plinth shows that it was commissioned by Sir W. Burgate (d. 1409) and his wife "Elionere". Noted in Cautley (1982). The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TM0824275599] notes: "Parish church. Mid to late C14, south porch added and refenestrated C15. Nave restored 1864-5, chancel restored 1872 [...] Late C14 octagonal font on a double plinth with a dedicatory inscription, stem has 4 lions, seraphs and rosettes to bowl with Evangelist symbols, angels and Burgate arms."
