Church Notes: monastery founded in about 676; Saxon Benedictine abbey of Holy Hill Monastery; Breedon priory was founded as an Augustinian monastery in ca. 1120; dilapidated and in debt by 1441; surrendered for dissolution in 1539 -- interesting Anglo-Saxon (?) carvings all over this church; studied in Clapham, who dates them to the pre-Danis period, the late 8thC
No entry found for Breedon-on-theHill in the Domesday survey, but a monastery here is reported as early as 676 AD. Hexagonal font according to Gough (1792) and Paley (1844) [the latter under "Bredon, Leicestershire" refers to this one]. Gough (bid.) writes: "On Bredon font, which is also hexagon, are these arms: 1.a chevron between three garbs; 2.a chevron between three spread eagles; 3. and 5.seven mascles conjoined, 3. 3. I.; 6.a bend". Noted in Nichols (1875-1811). Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period with heraldic ornamentation. In Pevsner (1984): "Font. Octagonal, with shields, big flower panels, and tracery panels." The United Benefice of Breedon and Worthington web site has: "Under the tower now serving as a baptistry is a very fine octagonal 15th century font. Its faces and pillar support are decorated with elaborate tracery window designs, spoked floral wheels and several shields in delicate sandstone relief. Some of the medieval families represented by those shields are shown on the illuminated panel behind the font [source: www.benefice.org.uk/breedon_church/the_breedon_story/part06.php] [accessed 20 September 2006]. The arms on one of the shields could be those of the De Quincey Family.
