Blomefield (1805-1810) notes: "On the font I saw the arms of Bosville, (a I suppose,) carved in stone, with A on one side, and B on the other, being the initial letters of the name of Adam Bosville, who was patron in 1362, about which time this might be set up". The church itself would have been much older, as Blomefield (ibid.) names "Eudo, parson of Shelfhangre, in the time of John de Ho, Lord" in 1272. Described, with an illustration by Orlando Jewitt, in Paley (1844) as "a very beautiful Decorated Font [...] the sides of the bowl panelled with ogee headed arches and spandrels; they contain shields, with other sculptures: on one, are the arms of Adam Bosville, (a shield charged with a fesse between six fleur-de-lis,) who was patron of the living in 1362, and probably the donor of the Font; on either side are his initials, A. B." Described in Romilly Allen (1888) as a Decorated font [R.A. agrees with Paley on the identification of the initials -- R.A. spells the location "Shelfhanger"]. There are human heads, one to each angle of the basin bottom rim, and four-leaf rosettes, one between each pair of heads. "The shaft is also octagonal and plain, having each side slightly curved or hollowed inward. The interior is lined with lead, which bears the date of 1639, Dec. 12." (ibid.) The font is raised on an octagonal plinth. Cox & Harvey (1907) note that this font "contains the arms and initials of Adam Bosville, who died in 1360", but their information is less accurate than Paley's. Pevesner & Wilson (1999) note that Adam Bosville "is mentioned as patron of the church in 1362 and 1375." Noted and illustrated in Knott (2006)
