view of church interior - altar

view of church interior - altar - detail

García Gómez (2007) notes a series of fonts in the area that share a common charateristic in their decoration: round arch-heads with fitting ribs inside (fonts at Blacos, Garray, Muriel de la Fuente, San Esteban de Gormaz and Zayuelas de Soria). The font probably dates from the time of the re-population of the Garray area (ca. 1106). The basin is shaped like an inverted truncated cone and is decorated with irregular round arches containg Visigothic-looking crosses (pattée), concentric circles, rings (representing the sun, the moon), figures (some praying); very crude rendition, appropriate of the secondary workshops which produced many of these artifacts. [NB: García Gómez (ibid.) lists a second Romanesque font in this village [not seen at the time of our visit in May 1999]. On-site notes: 13 arches encircle basin; grooved rim and diagonal lines carved around arcade with twisted columns; crudely carved figues encircle the bowl.
