Font Notes:
A font in this church is recorded in Dineley (aka Dingley, 1867) [NB: we have no information on which of the two fonts it refers to]. The inventory of Herefordshire (1931-1934, vol. III: 116) reports two fonts located at the time in the gardens of Grange House, the former Market Hall. One of these was the basin of a 12th-century font [cf. Index entry for Leominster No. 1]; the other is described in this source (ibid.) as "a 13th-century font with a square chamfered bowl, stem with four attached shafts, moulded caps and bases". This appears to be the same font, a rather crude and plain work, illustrated in the 1989 Woodmansterne miniguide of the Priory of St. Peter and St. Paul; it locates the font in the 'sanctuay', to the right of the altar. [NB: Cox & Harvey (1907: 177) mention the font at Leominster as containing the Greek palindrome "ΝΙΨΟΝ ΑΝΟΜΗΜΑ ΜΗ ΜΟΝΑΝ ΟΨΙΝ"; they refer to the font as "more recent", after a mention of the 1667 date -- not included in this Index as it is probably a post-1700 font].
