There is an entry for Aylsham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey, but it mentions neither church nor priest in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "This town in Domesday Book is written ELESHAM [...] ; the whole town with its berewics of Scipedan, Brundal, and Crachefort or Crakeford, belonged to Guert or Guerd, the Dane", and reports William Rufus [i.e., 1087-1100] giving the church of 'Eilesham' to "the abbey of St. Martin at Battle in Sussex, which was founded by the Conqueror". Blomefield (ibid.) names "Brithtric, in the time of the Conqueror", as first recorded rector here, and later, after the donation of the church to the abbey, "John de Hastings [...] being presented by Battle abbey." Blomefield (ibid.) describes the church and notes a font in it, although, as can be gatherered from the description, not the original one here: "The Church is dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel [...] and is a regular building having a nave, two isles, two transepts, a chancel, and two isles thereto adjoining; a square tower, chimes, clock and ten bells, with a small broach or spire on the top; there is an old charnel-house at the end of the chancel; the porch is covered with lead, as is the whole building [...] The Font is neatly carved; on it are the emblems of the four Evangelists, the instruments of the passion, a crucifix, the arms of John of Gaunt Duke of Lancaster, Lord Morley, Bourchier, St. George, and a cross floré." This font is also noted in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848: "the font is elaborately sculptured." The heraldic devices are described in detail in Farrer (1887 [1885?]): "On the Font: XLVI. France (modern) quartering England, with label of three, John of Gaunt— BL Norf, vi. 277, 279. See No. XV. -- XLVII An escutcheon within an orle of martlets (Erpingham, Vert, an escutcheon within an orle of martlets argent.) The major was granted by Henry IV. to Sir Thomas Erpingham. — BL Nor/, vi. 271. -- XLVIII. A lion rampant crowned {Morley, Argent, a lion rampant sable, crowned and armed or.) -- XLIX. Three water-bougets {Roos or Ros, Gules, three water-bougets argent.) This shield is here again mistaken for that of Bourchier in Bt Norf, vi. 279. See vol. i. 276. -- L. Shield of the Passion, Scourging pillar. -- LI. Shield of the Passion, Spear and reed, with sponge in saltire. -- LII. The letter W." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a heraldic baptismal font of the Perpendicular period. Described and illustrated in Bond (1908) as a 15th-century Perpendicular font. Pevsner & Wilson (1997) note: "If it is Perp[endicular], it was much retooled in 1852". On-site notes: there may have been some recarving done on this font [cf. supra]; it is different from the Seven-sacraments font in Burgh-next-Aylsham, of the same period; the rectangular panels of the octagonal bowl alternate shields bearing the emblems of the Passion with those of the four Evangelists; the chamfer is ornamented with angels; the stem of the base has ornamented panelling, alternating shields [coats of arms of 1)John of Gaunt, 2)Sir Thomas Erpingham, 3)Morley and 4)De Roos] and Gothic arches, while the lower volume of the base has a floral motif; the underbowl chamfer has four winged cherubs alternating with winged hearts; the four hanging shields with coats of arms alternate with varied tracery patterns; there are pairs of tiny square flowers on the frames of the basin panels and on the lower base sidesbase. The wooden cover is modern.
