There is an entry for this Walton[-on-the-Hill] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TQ2255/walton-on-the-hill/] [aacessed 17 December 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Allen (1831) writes: "The font is a very curious one, of lead round which are nine figures, in a sitting posture, their faces much mutilated." Noted in Paley (1844) after en entry in 'Archaeologia' (vol. XI: 122). Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports: "there is a curious leaden font, formed with nine compartments, in each of which is a figure in a sitting posture." Illustrated in Bradley & al. (1850). Illustrated also in Brayley (1850), who writes: "An ancient leaden font, of which a representation is annexed, is the most curious object in the church. It is circular, resting on a massive circular stone-pedestal, and surrounded by nine whole-length figures, each in a sitting posture: of its history, nothing has been recorded." In Hussey (1852) [after M. & B.?] Noted in the National Gazetteer of 1868. Listed in Cox (1875) In Andre (1882) as a leaden font of the Norman period. Noted with an illustration in Lethaby (1893). Described and illustrated in Bond (1908) who dates it to the late-12th or early-13th century. Cox-Harvey (1907) describes it as a fine Norman font "of striking design". The Victoria County History (Surrey, vol. 3, 1911) notes: "Walton Church is said to have been founded by John de Walton in the first half of the 13th century [...] The most interesting thing in the church is the 12th-century lead font, cylindrical in shape, with its sides divided into eight and three-quarter panels, each under a round arch on twisted shafts with volute capitals; the spandrels are filled with foliage, and there are bands of foliage around the top and bottom edges. In each bay is the seated figure of a saint, each fourth figure repeating. Three out of each four have books, but there is no distinctive feature to show whom they are intended to represent. In two places on the top are the attachments for the staples of the cover. The font stands on a modern stone base at the south-west of the nave." Described and illustrated in Zarnecki (1957) who dates it to ca. 1150-1160). Noted in Rodwell (2009). Lead cylindrical baptismal font; the basin upper side is ornamented with a thin band of foliage motif; the lower basin side is ornamented with a similar band; in between, the rest of the basin is covered by an arcade containing six seated figures; each of three figures is repeated once to a total of six; the first figure has the right hand raised in benediction, the left hand holds a book to the chest; the second figure has also the right hand raised in benediction, the left hand rests the book on the knee; the third figure has the right hand on the knee and the left hand rests the book on the other knee; the arcade has round arches; capitals, arches and columns are ornamented, as are the spandrels and the bands below the rim and at bottom. [NB: not to be mistaken with another "Walton-on-the-Hill", near Liverpool, also with an entry in this Index]
