No individual entry found for Low / Lower Bentham in the Domesday survey. The entry for this parish in Whitaker (1823) mentions the present [ca. 1823] church as being from about the time of Henry VII [i.e., 1485-1509] and having retained "not a vestige of the original [Saxon] fabric"; it mentions no font in it. Cram (1914) reports a cylindrical font with foliage ornamentation and an interesting cover here [NB: Cram gives the name as 'Bentham' and the county as the East R. of Yorkshire]. Mee (1941) notes: "The massive alabaster font has a remarkable canopied cover, carved with roses and honeysuckle and adorned with 12 pinnacles, which are crowned with golden pomegranates." [NB: on 29 October 1991 Christie's London sold a lot (#39) which included a William Richard Lethaby (1857-1931) drawing of a design for "the font-cover at Bentham church" -- there is also a design for a font Lethaby presented to a competition, but we have no evidence that the project was ever executed]. NB: a photograph claiming to be taken in the interior of this church in April 2009 shows the fancy cover reported by the above sources; however, the font under this cover is a tub-shaped basin of ancient design, perhaps 11th- or 12th-century; it is raised on a modern base and plinth. Was this font recovered recently and replaced the modern font? -- to be completed
