There are three entries for [Wold] Newton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [www.domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TA0473/wold-newton/] [accessed 23 February 2015], none of which mention a cleric or church in it. Sheahan & Whellan (1857) report ''an ancient circular font'' in this church. Bulmer's Directory of 1892 notes: "The font is very ancient, and exhibits some good carving". Described in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a tub-shaped baptismal font of the Norman period with "decided Classic feeling about it is the ornament in high relief". In Pevsner & Neave (1995): ''Font. Drum-shaped, Norman, with zigzag, a palmette band and cable moulding.'' On-site notes: small tub font, similar in size to most metal fonts of the period; probably Norman; the upper rim has braid motif all around; one of the sides is broken, probably where the original hinge/staple was removed; there is a wide band of zig-zag under the rim that divides this area into triangles, each filled with a large leaf; the rest appears plain. The font is covered in patches of cement [repairs?]; otherwise it is covered in dark-grey paint. The tall round plinth is modern. Tisdall (1998?) describes on one of the sides "a partridge watches her egg" [NB: this motif is not on the font but there is a partridge-like bird sculpted on the Norman arch of the south door] [cf. Images area]. The cover consists of a round platform on which four ribs hold up a cross finial; appears modern.
