Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a tub-shaped baptismal font of the Norman period. Described in Mann (1985) as baptismal font of the 12th century decorated with lozenge pattern. Noted in Bulmer's History and Directory of East Yorkshire (1892) [2007 transcription by Colin Hinson in http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Thwing/Thwing92.html [accessed 4 September 2007]: "The font is ancient." The basin is almost cylindrical, and has a braid motif all around the upper rim, the rest of the sides covered in a pattern of large lozenges; the squat base is round and modern; the font must have been seriously damaged in the past, as there is a top-to-bottom insert of new stone, abouth a sixth of the total volume of the basin; the basin well is lead-lined and has a central drain. The wooden cover has metal decoration and ring handle, and appears Victorian. An article by Wally Simpkin in the Driffield Post-Driffield Times [http://www.driffieldtoday.co.uk/wally-simpkins-look-at-east-riding-history/Ancient-fonts.2085398.jp] [accessed 1 July 2008] notes:" Whether it belonged to Thwing is somewhat uncertain. Curiously enough it was found at Sewerby, and was claimed and erected in Thwing church".
