Noted in Glynne's August 1827 visit to this church, (in Butler, 2007): "The font is of cylindrical form and perfectly plain." Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a tub-shaped font of the Norman period. Noted in the Victoria County History (North Riding, vol. 2, 1923) : "The plain circular font dates from the 13th century". The tub-shaped basin has tapering sides and is not entirely plain, having a flat moulding at the upper rim; The wooden cover, consisting of a round platform on which rise four ribs around a centre pivot with trefoiled Latin cross finial, appears Victorian.
