Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Harrison (1920) reports a "very old font" in the Norman church at Upper Waltham. Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a tub-shaped baptismal font of the Norman period. The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 4, 1953) notes: "The chancel and nave are of the early 12th century [...] The font is tub-shaped on a square base, probably coeval with the church". The pland of the church interior in the VCH entry (ibid.) shows the font at the west end of the nave. Described in Whiteman (1994) as a tub-shaped baptismal font of the 12th century, similar to many others in the area. Described and illustrated in the CRSBI (2008): "A tub font with smooth, tapering sides, sitting on two very worn, superimposed plinths, the upper one cylindrical and the lower one square. The basin has a lead lining. There is a square repair on the W side of the bowl, and other repairs on the N and SW sides of the rim. Towards the bottom, the bowl is ringed by two rather irregular parallel incised lines, under which the angle of the taper is increased."
