Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports "a Norman font" in this church. Bond (1908) states that "of the stone and lead fonts that have come down to us from Norman or pre-Conquest days the earliest type is that of the unmounted tub-shaped font, such as that of Tangmere." With respect to the dating of this font, Bond (ibid.) writes: "we must reserve judgment; certainly we have no right to insist that they are Norman." [NB: Bond spells the name both 'Tangemere' and 'Tangmere']. The font has the shape of a beaker, narrower at the bottom and with a round moulding at the upper rim; it appears to be cemented to a wider circular plinth that looks contemporary with the basin. Harrison (1920) reports a font, possibly Norman, topped by an old cover. Tyrrell-Green (1928) refers to it as "undoubtedly Norman" and compares its shape to that of the [probably later] wooden font at Efenechtyd in Wales [cf. Index entry]. Illustrated in a drawing by Pike (1989). The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 4, 1953) notes: "The 11th-century church, which is mentioned in Domesday Book, consisted of the present nave and a chancel; the latter was enlarged to its present dimensions in the 13th century; the bell-cote is of unknown, but ancient, date [...] The font is of the 12th century, of the shape of a modern flower pot; the cover is of oak, with a central standard and S-shaped volutes, of the 17th century." Described in Whiteman (1994): "In the nave [...] is the plain tub-shaped font, one of the oldest in Sussex". Noted and illustrated in the CRSBI (2008): "Remains of staples in rim to NW and repair diametrically opposite to SE."
