There are three entries for [Black] Bourton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP2804/black-bourton/] [accessed 8 November 2017], none of which mentions priest or church in it. Tyrrell-Green (1928) reports a baptismal font of the Norman period here, in which "the bowl is supported not directly by the base upon which it is mounted, but there intervenes a short cylindrical shaft to carry the bowl"; he gives the font at Hinton Parva, in Wiltshire, as being of the same type. The Victoria County History (Oxon., vol. 15, 2006) notes: “Black Bourton had its own church by the mid 12th century [...] The church was baptismal probably from its foundation, since the font is late 12th-century […] plain tub-shaped […], on a square base”; this same source mentions in footnote 55 that an illustration exists: " Illust. in Jnl. Brit. Arch. Soc. n.s. xxi, fig. 26; Bodl. MS. Top. Oxon. a 65, f. 92." [www.englandpast.net/oxon/main.html]. Noted in Sherwood & Pevsner (1974): "Font. Late C12. Round. On a square base with corner spurs." The font consists of a cylindrical basin raised on a round-to-square lower base; the basin is plain except for a moulding around the lower side; the square part of the lower base has leaf (?) motif at the angles. The wooden cover is flat, round and plain, and appears modern.
