There are two entries for Stewkley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP8526/stewkley/] [accessed 23 November 2015], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. The Catalogue of the manuscript, maps... of the British Museum [Add. 9460. fol. 94] lists: "A pencil drawing of the font in Stewkley Church; by Samuel Lysons, Esq.: 4 in. x 3 in. Noted, with a drawing by J. Basire, in Gough (1792) as a baptismal font "of the age of Henry I" [i.e., ca. 1100]. Noted in Parker (1850) as a plain round font of the Norman period. Parker (ibid.) refers to an engraving of this font in 'Archaeologia' (vol. x, pl. 17). Described in Sheahan (1862): "The font Is quite plain, and has been formed out of a single block of stone". Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. The Victoria County History (Buckingham, vol. 3, 1925) notes: "The building, which dates from the middle of the 12th century, is a particularly well-preserved example of the best style of architecture of that time, the few alterations which have been made having affected the original detail to a very slight extent [...] The font is probably of 12th-century date, and has a plain circular tapering bowl with a moulded base." Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a tub-shaped baptismal font of the Norman period. Monolithic tub font consisting of a plain bucket-shaped basin raised on a two-step lower base [or lower-base & plinth combination].
