There are four entries for Enborne [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU4365/enborne/] [accessed 25 May 2015], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. A font here is noted in Parker (1850): "The font is N[orman], circular, with an arcade around it." Similarly noted in Murray (1882). Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 4, 2011] notes: "The nave with its north and south aisles dates from the 12th century and the chancel is of a century later. [...] The font stands at the east end of the south aisle and consists of a 12th-century cylindrical unmounted bowl 19½ in. high on a modern base. It is enriched with an arcading of sixteen small semicircular 'arches' carried on shafts or pillars with capitals and moulded bases, above which in the spandrels is a series of small heads. The space inclosed by two of the arches is blank, but in the remaining cases is filled with various upright ornaments, the precise signification of which is difficult to determine." The VCH (ibid.) quotes from Keyser [(C. E. Keyser in Trans. Newbury Dist. Field Club, v. 109)]: "On the east side is a six-spoked wheel on a stem (?), and we may also notice a cross, various implements and figures supported on pillars, zigzags, cable and beading'". Listed as Norman in Tyrrell-Green (1928) with a group of tub-shaped vessels reduced to approximately the height of the inner well, hence that of a "normal" basin [other English fonts listed in that group are: Berrington, Rothley and West Thorney]. The ornamentation on this font is described in Tyrrell-Green (ibid., p. 78-79) as an arcade, each bay of which is "occupied by a staff, the heads of the staves assuming a variety of forms, some of these figures at Enborne being apparently representations of the crosses erected in early times in churchyards or by the wayside." The font at Sherburn, in Yorkshire, is given as a similar example. The font is illustrated, and its details individually described, in the CRSBI (2015): "W end of N aisle, drum-shaped. Carved with an arcade of 16 bays, having round-headed arches with cushion capitals carried on half columns with attic bases, some badly worn. The bases rest on a plain, continuous plinth, and the rim has a roll moulding. Various motifs are carved within the bays and in the spandrels as follows (starting from E and numbering clockwise): Bay 1 Spiral (cable) column capped with worn, semicircular object.Bay 2 Empty. Bay 3 Spiral (cable) column capped with short spike.Bay 4 Plain half column, widening at top. Bay 5 Plain half column capped with voided cross. Bay 6 Plain half column capped with voided pelta. Bay 7 Paired half columns with spoked wheel head. Bay 8 Fillet, double chamfered with semicircular cap. Bay 9 Band of directional chevron, alternating roll and hollow, pointing upwards capped with inverted W-motif. Bay 10 Plain half column capped with a plain boss on cross arms.Bay 11 Continuous arch of plain roll profile. Bay 12 Broad fillet with semicircular top, voided to leave outline only. Bay 13 Two half columns, each with roundel head, the 2 roundels touching. Bay 14 Broad fillet with double arched head, ornamented with a vertical chain of 9 bosses.Bay 15 Plain half column capped with semicircular motif. Bay 16 Empty. [...] Spandrels: Bay 1-2 Human head. Bay 2-3 ?Bird head (worn). Bay 3-4 Beast head. Bay 4-5 Human head with beast ears. Bay 5-6 ?Bird (worn). Bay 6-7 Head (worn). Bay 7-8 Human head. Bay 8-9 Human head. Bay 9-10 ?Horned head (worn). Bay 10-11 Head. Bay 11-12 Boss. Bay 12-13 Horned head. Bay 13-14 Boss with volutes at top. Bay 14-15 Moustached head. Bay 15-16 Head. Bay 16-1 Head with fringe. [...] The font [...] belongs to [...] perhaps in the first quarter of the 12thc., and may be contemporary with the original, aisleless church."
