There are two entries for this Compton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU5179/compton/] [accessed 6 May 2015], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. A font here is described in 'Church notes...' (1887) in the context of some "notes [that] were taken between 1835 and 1840", as a font of the Norman style. The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 4m, 1924) notes: "The building was much restored and modernized in 1850 [...] It is, therefore, impossible to assign a date to the body of the building, but the Norman font, which is still in use, suggests the existence of a 12th-century structure; the tower is a 15th-century addition. [...] A circular 12th-century tub font remains, though its base has been partly broken away. The cover, which has been much restored, probably dates from the 15th century." Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a tub-shaped baptismal font of the Norman period
