Described in Pike (1989) and (1987-1991), and Stalley (1987): on the font basin there are eight angels, carved in low relief, standing in rounded arches set on piers; each of the angels holds an emblem of the faith: the cross, the chalice, the key, incense, the sword of the spirit, the crozier, the cross and orb. The bowl curves inward over the top to a circular opening, with hatched rope edging, in the centre, which is 12 in. in diameter. A copper plate has been placed in this inner opening, on which stands a glass bowl for holy water. Dated to ca. 1600 by Stalley (1987) and Crookshank [NB: Pike (1987-1991: 209) notes: "Dr. Geraldine Carville claims (Monasterevin,, Valley of the Roses, 1989, pp. 73-79) that the font is thirteenth or fourteenth century, but there does not seem to be evidence to support this view", and follows Stalley's and Crookshank's dating to ca. 1600].
