Church Notes: original pre-Romanesque church ca. 835; Romanesque cathedral documented by 1128 but nothing remains; Gothic cathedral started ca. 1240; present west tower spires are mid-19thC -- listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00090326]: "C'est en 1239 que l'évêque Rainaud prit la décision de remplacer sa vieille cathédrale romane par un édifice au goût du jour, de style gothique. Le choeur, commencé dès 1240, est consacré en 1287, mais n'est achevé qu'en 1410. La démolition de la nef romane permet alors de reprendre les travaux, en commençant par la façade occidentale en 1424. La construction se poursuit tout au long du siècle, pour finir par le transept, achevé au début du 16e siècle. Les flèches ne furent réalisées qu'après le classement de la cathédrale."
