Described and illustrated in Pike (1989: 28-29): "this font basin in a yard outside the Franciscan Friary, built by Doolin in 1891. The font is said to have come from the Medieval Church founded in 1269 [...] dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, otherwise Our Lady of Clonmel"[... and] is not in use. It is made of limestone and is square with a drain at the bottom on on. There are unformed heads on two corners and an inscription affixedto the font which reads: 'Baptismal Font of the Ancient Church of St. Mary's Clonmel'". Pike (ibid.) informs also of a pedestal of a font that appears medieval and is decorated "with shield and crest", though it may not belong to this font. [We are grateful to Dr. Rachel Moss, and to Trinity College, Dublin, for the copy of Ms. Pike's work, and to Ms. Joan Pike for her kind permission to reproduce her original drawings] [cf. Index entries for Clonmel Nos. 2 & 3 for two medieval stoups in this site]
