Church Notes: This Church of St. Peter should not be confused with the Roman Catholic of the same name, also in Drogheda [cf. Drogheda No. 1] -- "St. Peter’s church was established on the north side of the River Boyne also before 1186 and was given by de Lacy to the Augustinian canons of Llanthony Prima in Monmouthshire, Wales (The Topography and Layout of Medieval Drogheda by John Bradley, published by the Old Drogheda Society, 1997)" [http://stpetersdrogheda.ie/history/] [accessed 16 June 2014]
Described and illustrated by R. Armstrong in an article in The Dublin Penny Journal edition of May 4, 1833. Armstrong provides a good description of the font and its ornamentation, which is accompanied by an excellent woodcut of the font, and decries the fact that, at the time of his writing, the font was lying neglected and unknown in the yard of the sexton's house, where it was used as a pig-trough. It was later removed to the church porch, probably as a result of Armstrong's cry for help for the font. Described and illustrated in Strickland (1921): "The Font is said to have been purposely broken at the time of the burning of the old church by Cromwell. In 1921, Mr. Chamney had it repaired in memory of his father, William Graves Chamney, who had been baptised in the church in 1821. The Font is octagonal; six of the facets were each divided into two arched niches or compartments, each niche containing the figure of an apostle. The seventh facet was occupied by a representation of the Baptism of Christ. The remaining facet has a shield with arms, two bendlets, a mullet in chief, impaling three lions rampant; the shield supported by two kneeling angels. The panels of the lower portion [i.e., of the underbowl] have angels holding scrolls. The arms have not been identified. Mr. Burtchaell suggests that the bendlet coat may be Sherle, a Co. Meath family [.... The woodcut in the Dublin Penny Journal shows the condition of the Font in 1832, with three of its sides fractured, and without a base or pedestal. In the restoration, this fracture was repaired by inserting a fragment found at the residence of Mr. John Leland, Beltchburne, supposed to have belonged to the Font, and filling up the remainder of the gap with plain stone without any carving. A plain octagonal base was also added." Described and illustrated in Roe (1976: 256-261) as "uncommonly massive, splendidly ornamented". Roe identifies the panels [A-B under each numeral, starting on the right of the coat-of-arms] as follows: 1)A: Apostle, Philip?; B: Apostle, Matthias; 2)A: Apostle, Simon or James Minor; B: Apostle, Thomas; 3)A: Apostle, Bartholomew; B: Apostle, unidentified; 4)A: John; B:Apostle, James Major; 5)A: unidentified; B: Peter?; 6)Baptism of Jesus; 7)A: Apostle, Paul; B: Andrew; 8)Donors' coat of arms [NB: Roe questions the original interpretation of the coat-of-arms in the Dublin Penny Journal; admitting the lack of conclusive heraldic evidence Roe suggests that "the Sharl family seems plausible. This is family known variously as Serle, Scharle, Serlis, etc."; her other suggestion is that the "donor's name should be sought among the extensive family of the Crices"]. Described and illustrated in Pike (1989: 40): the medieval basin of this font "must have been brought in from the old Church", in whose steeple a hundred men are said to have burned to death holding out against Cromwell; the octagonal basin was damaged by Cromwellian troops in 1649. "The font is in use. It is lead lined and has a central drain. It is octagonal and decorated by relief carving. There are two Apostles on each of six panels of the bowl. The remaining panels carry the Baptism of Christ in Jordan and a family crest on the eighth face. Guardian angels appear on the eight faces of the chamfer". The web site of St. Peter's [http://drogheda.armagh.anglican.org/history] [accessed 30 September 2007] quotes Roe: "The magnificent font, which stands by the door at the West end of the church, is the only surviving relic of the Medieval church still in use. Helen M. Roe in an article entitled Two Decorated Fonts in Drogheda, Co. Louth, published in the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Journal says the following: “The earliest reference [to the font] seems to be the illustrated account given in the Dublin Penny Journal of 1833, the substance of which is substantially repeated some ten years later by John D’Alton in his History of Drogheda. According to these writers St. Peter’s Church was severely damaged in 1649 by Cromwellian troops, while just a century later, what still survived of the fabric of the pre-Reformation building was cleared away for the erection of the present church. As it is to-day the font is badly damaged; the pedestal and base seem to be lost. Whether such injuries and losses are to be attributed to the Cromwellian forces or were of later occurrence cannot be said. In this writer’s opinion, however, it well may be that at the erection of the new and up-to-date church, the font with its pedestal and base were simply thrown out as hopelessly old-fashioned, even perhaps, according to the classical tastes of the time, accounted barbarously “Gothick” in style. Be that as it may, by 1833 the pedestal and base were already missing and the great carved bowl itself lay in the sexton’s yard as a feeding trough “for the dirtiest of animals.”. Horrified by such neglect and misuse, the writer concluded his account with the hope that it might catch the eye of the then incumbent of St. Peter’s and so induce him to have the font removed to some more worthy situation. His hopes were vain. Almost a hundred years were to elapse before, in 1921, the pig-trough font carefully repaired was restored to its proper use by Mr. William Chamney as a memorial to his father. Placed at the west end of the north side of the church, the font is now mounted on a short plain plinth and low base. It is octagonal and formed as two registers with a circular basin now lined with lead. The eight upper panels are vertical and somewhat wider than their height while the lower ones, sharply chamfered inwards, decrease in width downwards to be finished by thick, roped moulding which encircles the whole bowl. Beneath the projection of the moulding the sides of the font continue for a few centimetres and it may be presumed that the joining between bowl and supporting pillar was effected here and thus would have been concealed by the overhang of the moulding. The vessel is very rich in appearance. The panels of both registers are framed horizontally and vertically by twisted “vine-stem” mouldings the vertical lines dividing at the top to form round-headed niches separated by plain pillars, the spandrels above being copiously decorated. Six panels of the upper register are thus formed as two niches within which stand two of the Apostles while the remaining two panels display a single subject - the Baptism of Jesus and a secular coat-of-arms with angel supporters. The panels of the lower register, some which are cruelly injured, are all formed as single niches in each of which was an angel. Several of these hold a long banderole or scroll but the angel immediately below the Baptism is show holding a long pleated robe over its arms.”"
