Described and illustrated in Pike (1989: 25): baptismal font probably the original baptismal vessel of the "Augustinian or Black Friars' Abbey founded in 1315-1316 by John, Earl of Kildare [...] now used for Church of Ireland worship [...]. This Medieval font also has a Shell Pattern [...], is hemispherical, decorated with vertical bands in relief of leaf design and diagonal hatching. The conical pedestal stands on a cushion base which is decorated with Shell Pattern. It has a plain square plinth. Noted and illustrated in the TRIARC - Edwin Rae Collection (Digital Image Collection): "(handwritten on back of image): 217./Adare, Co. Limerick: Augustinian priory: Baptismal font in N.W. corner of chancel [choir] from c. 5 ft. from base [carved piece, not the modern rectangular block beneath the whole font]. The cone-shaped tapering piece between the base and the basin is new, the design of Mr. Henson". The font was moved to the church of the Trinitarian Abbet when it became the Parish Church of Adare [cf. Index entry for Adare No. 2 for the font at the Augustinian Friary]
