Church Notes: church of ca.1190 on the site of an earlier ecclesiastical place; modified mid-18th, 20thC
Described and illustrated in Pike (1989: 25-26) as being the original font of the church of St. Multose, built in 1190, and still in use. The font "is square with a central drain and is made of limestone. It is tripartite. The four square pods might be reconstructed. The central round pedestal is fliuted diagonally. It has a square plinth. The bowl is square externally, whereas internally the corners are rounded [NB: local sources -received indirectly by BSI- claim this font is said to be older than William the Conqueror, but the church of this Romanesque abbey is dated 1190, which makes the claim unlikely]. The entry for this church in kinsale.cork.anglican.org [https://kinsale.cork.anglican.org/about/how-to-find-us/st-multose-church-kinsale/] [accessed 27 April 2023] notes: "Originally built in 1190 this church has undergone various improvements and additions throughout its 800 year history". Noted and illustrated in James Hundt (4 March 2021) [https://foresightarch.com/st-multose-church-kinsale/] [accessed 27 April 2023]: "ancient square stone baptismal font sitting on 5 columns at the entrance to the main aisle. Perhaps the stone floor that it sits upon is designed for the pouring of water over baptismal candidates as they kneel near the font."
