The font was reported in place at the Collegiate Church of St. Mary the Virgin, in 1891, in the Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland (1891, vol. 21: 114): "The font is very ancient, probably thirteenth or fourteenth century, and is like the font at the Cathedral of St. Canice [cf. Index entry for Kilkenny No. 2]. Described and illustrated in Pike (1989: 18-19) as the second medieval baptismal font in this church, said to date from 1225; it was "moved from St. Mary's Church, Gowran, in March 1986. It is now used alternately with the original font of the Cathedral". The sides of the basin are decorated with heavy Romanesque flutes, ten on each side, and fleur-de-lis decoration on the top surface, much like the font at Kilkenny St. Canice's [cf. Index entry for Kilkenny No. 2]. [cf. Index entry for Old Leighlin No. 2 for the original 12th-century(?) font of this cathedral]
