Font Notes:
Noted and illustrated in Fleury (1878-1882) with a full drawing which shows a Mosan-type basin with Norman-looking heads at 90-degree angles; the two visible sides of the basin have an ugly squalid quadruped, probably meant to depict a lion, on the left, and a foliage motif on the right; the base is a broad cylindrical column, almost as wide as the basin, with four outer shafts which appear constructional, and rest on the round lower base on rounded bases. Corblet (1881-1882: v. 2, p. 121) lists it as being of the 11th century, with an illustration from Fleury [cf. supra]. In Cloquet (1895) as a font of the Tournai type. So does Enlart (1902), who mentions a five-column base and heads at 90-degree angles on the basin sides. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM02000694]: "Cuve circulaire creusée dans un bloc quadrangulaire de marbre noir. Fût court cantonné de quatre colonnettes [...] 11e siècle" [NB: the original listing reports "Les colonnettes manquent", that is, the outer colonnettes of the base were missing at the time, the original listing date in Monuments historiques appears as "1907/05/02" -- if Fleury's late-19thC engraving was accurate, these colonnettes went missing between then and 1907].
