view of church exterior - south view

Scene Description: Source caption: "St Martin's church, Waithe. St Martin’s church is Grade I listed and is of Saxon origin with a late Saxon tower. The tower forms the crossing between the nave and chancel and there is also a transept to the south containing a small vestry and porch. The Victorian rebuilding in 1861 was by James Fowler [...] The earliest part of the church, the tower, was erected in the 11th century. This has a late Saxon appearance – with its twin bell openings – but the shafts are topped off with Norman details. The church tower actually stands at the point of the crossover of Saxon and Norman cultures. The Church now under care of Churches conservation trust."

GET PICS https://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=179892308 AND https://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=179892419 There are four entries for Waithe [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TA2800/waithe/] [accessed 19 April 2023] none of which mentions cleric or church in it. Bond (1908) notes it as one of a number of sculptured fonts "which have been credited with undue antiquity, owing to the rudeness or uncouthness of their ornament; but it by no means follows that what is archaic is always ancient", and suggests a dating around the 12th century [cf. infra]. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TA2837100706] notes: "Parish church. C10, C11, C13, restored 1861 […] All fittings are from 1861 including the drum font lightly carved in semblance of C12 work." The present font is probably Victorian.
