There are several entries for this Sutton [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TM3046/sutton/] [accessed 18 April 2023], one of which, in the lordship of Walter of Caen, and tenant-in-chief Robert Malet in 1086, reports "1 church. 0.18 church lands" in it. Parker (1855) notes an octagonal font "with evangelistic emblems on the bowl, and animals around the pedestal." Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font dated ca. 1443, in the Perpendicular style, a noteworthy example. James (1930) notes: "Sutton Church has a font with figures, including two of the Annunciation. Those round the base are said to be servers at Mass." Knott [2005?] writes: "This mainly Victorian church conceals one of the finest fonts in the county. There is nothing else like it in all East Anglia. It has the 8 orders of the pre-Reformation church around the base, figures representing deacons, priests, bishops, mothers superior, etc. The supporting angels corbelling the bowl have, between them, the instruments of the Mass: paten, chalice, missal, etc. The figures on the bowl are the four evangelists, interspersed with Mary Magdalene, Christ, the symbol of the Holy Spirit, and a very rare God the Father, the old man himself, seated on his throne. Dowsing would have a fit." The wooden cover is octagonal, plain and flat; modern.
