Noted in Suckling (1846-1848) as a "splendid font [...] composed of the finest stone and is six feet one inch from the ground. Its form is octangular; but as seven of its sides were sculptured with representations of the Romish sacraments, the carved work has been sadly mutilated." Noted in Parker (1855) and Cautley (1949). Studied in detail in Nichols (1994) who reports that the font now [i.e., ca. 1992] "has a scrubbed look rather different from what I saw in 1983", obviously the result of restoration efforts after the fire set by vandals in 1985 which, Nichols adds, left expensive smoke damage to the church. Description of the scenes is given in Nichols (ibid.) as follows: 1)Baptism; 2)Eucharist; 3)Holy Orders; 4)Penance; 5)Extreme Unction; 6)Mariage; 7)Baptism of Christ; 8)Penance[ error? - probably Confirmation in either 2 or 8] . She dates the font to ca. 1500. Illustrated in Knott (2008), who notes the re-cut stem and plinth. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TM4290787106] notes: "Parish church. Medieval; chancel restored 1860 […] The nave probably has a C12 core: there is one blocked C12 window in the north wall and the inner arch of the south doorway is semi-circular […] The nave probably has a C12 core: there is one blocked C12 window in the north wall and the inner arch of the south doorway is semi-circular […] Good C15 font, the panels of the bowl with mutilated carvings of the Seven Sacraments and the Baptism of Christ; angels to the underside of the bowl and a buttressed stem with cusped panels between. The font stands on a 2-stepped octagonal plinth, with a raised upper step in the form of a Maltese Cross and with panelled risers."
