There is a single entry for "Walpola" in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/XX0000/walpole-st-andrew-and-st-peter/] [accessed 29 November 2013], and it mentions neither church nor cleric in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) notes that the patronage of the church of St. Peter was in the hands of the Bishop of Ely "In the 3d of Edward I" [i.e., 1275], and adds: "John de Langton was rector in the reign, of King Edward I"; on the church itself, he writes: "St. Peter's Church is one of the most beautiful parish churches in England, built of free-stone, consisting of a nave, 2 isles, and a chancel, all covered with lead; at the west end stands a noble, stately tower of stone, embattled. [...] On the font is this date, Ano. [..] Dni. [..] m. [..] c. c. c. c. c. === and [..] thanks". A mention of "a good font" and a "gorgeous font-cover of wood" appears in Cotman (1838). In Cautley (1949). Nichols (1994) is inclined to accept this font as part of the Seven-sacrament group even if the basin panels are "completely disfigured though shadows remain." Nichols (ibid.) refers to both Fryer and Cautley as having identified it as such, but she also indicates that neither Cox & Harvey nor Mortlock & Roberts mentioned it as part of the group. Bond (1908) is more interested in the post-Reformation font cover which he describes as being of the "rim buffet" type attached to the rim. The basin has the famous English inscription "Thynk and thank" repeated round the bowl (ibid.) Jenkins (1999) writes of the font cover: "Its fretwork rises like some exotic Ottoman smoking machine." It consists of a lower volume, octagonal with vertical sides, ending up on a crown-like rim; there are then four truncated-pyramid volumes, in decreasing side to form the "spire", and the large finial ball at the very top. As Jenkins puts it (ibid.), the fretwork does, indeed, emulate quasi-Arabesque levels! Hutton (1957) describes the font cover as "a (rare) early 17C unfolding carved wood cover." Cox & Harvey (1907) give the text of both inscriptions, the one at the base giving the date, 1532, and the name of the donor, "Whetorn Johannes sometime parson here". Described in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "[…] Inscription with the name of the parson, John Whetholme, and the date 1532 on the base. Font cover. Splendid Jacobean piece with an octagonal spire. The octagonal walls below open to give access to the font. Decoration with tapering facing pilasters in pairs, the usual blank arches and openwork arabesques. The font and cover are illustrated in Knott (2005), who reads the date as '1537'.
