Church Notes: round-tower church
There are ten entries for Seething [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TM3197/seething/] [accessed 5 March 2014], one of which mentions a church with lands in it, while another entry mentions two churches with lands in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) explains that the "two churches endowed with 16 acres [...] here mentioned were those of Framingham-Earl's, and Framingham Picot, in Hensted hundred". Of the other church, Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church was dedicated to St. Margaret, and was a rectory", but by his time "It is now served by a stipendiary curate, appointed by the corporation of Norwich." The church or its advowson had been the object of claims and counter-claims by the abbot of Langley and the bishop of Norwich, and Blomefield (ibid.) accounts for a rector in it: "In the 25th of Henry III. Richard was rector", which means the rectory was still around in 1241, but "the advowson of the moiety of the church of St. Margaret, granted to the abbot and his successours, on the cession or death of Richard the rector." Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports "an elaborately-sculptured font" in this church. Described and illustrated in Cautley (1949) as a baptismal of the Seven-Sacrament group that is "interesting because it differs in detail from some of the others." James (1930) states that "the Seven Sacraments font has been so recut as to be without interest". Studied in detail by Nichols (1992), who dates it to ca. 1473 and comments on the recutting it has undergone and the various comments by authors on the extent of the alterations. Nichols (ibid.) gives the scenes as: 1)Baptism; 2)Eucharist) 3)Confirmation; 4)Penance; 5)Extreme Unction; 6)Baptism of Christ; 7)Holy Orders; 8)Marriage. The chamfer of the underbowl has angels holding shields or scrolls. The pedestal of the base continues the marked buttresses of the basin down to the lower volume where the four symbols of the Evangelists occupy every other side; on the upper sides of the pedestal standing clerical (?) figures occupy alternate sides with square roses. Pevsner & Wilson (1999) do not mention the alterations and note it as an "extremely fine Perp[endicular] piece of c. 1480, almost completely undamaged." Knott (2005) provides full illustrations of the panels and comments: "the font is almost entirely recut, and to such an extent that there is no guarantee that what it shows now has anything to do with what was there before. Further, the whole piece is clearly a composite, and the cement that glued the bowl on to the stem is now cracking and coming away. The stone at the top of the stem is a quite different colour to the stone of the bowl, and probably they came from different fonts." Knott further suggests that, given the similarities with the fonts at Soley and nearby Brooke, one possibility is that the recut used those two fonts as guide to render a new program; the other possibility offered by Knott is that "the whole things is a clever fake, but the Confirmation panel is convincing." [NB: we have no information on the font from the original Domesday-time church here].
