There are a number of entries for this Melton [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TM2850/melton/] [accessed 12 April 2023], none of which report either cleric or church in it. Listed, with an engraving by J. Basire, in Gough (1792) as one of a group of fonts "in the Eastern part of Suffolk" ornamented with the Seven Sacraments. Noted in Parker (1855) and in Cautley (1949). Studied and described in Nichols (1994): octagonal font of the Seven-Sacrament group with an "elaborate foliated chamfer"; she describes the "reliefs badly defaced and some disfigurement, but good remains of female costume", and dates the font to the first quarter of the 16th century (in agreement with Fryer's dating of the armour depicted on the 8th relief [cf. infra]. The order of the panels [a/p Nichols (1994)] is: 1)Baptism; 2)Marriage; 3)Holy Orders; 4)Eucharist; 5)martyrdom of St. Andrew [patron saint of the church]; 6)Extreme Unction; 7)Penance; 8)Confirmation. Nichols informs that "in 1868 font moved from original to new church". Bond (1908), after Fryer, states that the armour on the Melton font is that in use ca. 1510 to ca. 1520 [Bond's dating is based on Fryer's, as he acknowledges in a footnote]. The font is the usual octagonal shape for this group, the eight panels of the basin deeply carved, but now badly damaged; the underbowl chamfer is decorated with a running floral pattern; the stam of the base has protruding buttreses at the angles with crocketed pinnacles, while the sides have Ogee crocketed niches with standing and sitting figures; the lower base or plinth, which has step-up step for the celebrant, has sides decorated with motifs in trefoil arches up-and-down. Cautley (1982) notes that the font in the baptismal scene is inscribed 'I.B.M." Noted and fully illustrated in Knott (2008): "The great feature of the interior is the late medieval font which was brought here from the old church. It is one of Suffolk's 13 seven sacrament fonts, one of only ten that have surviving imagery. It is slightly more battered than many of its companions, but it is particularly interesting for its unique 8th panel, which shows the martyrdom of St Andrew. It also has a characterful 'last rites' panel, with a chamberpot and a pair of slippers under the dying man's bed, as at Badingham. This font must have been one of the last of the series; the vinework under the bowl is reminiscent of that on the font at Walsoken in Norfolk, one of the very last fonts to be made in England before the Reformation intervened." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TM2839450604] notes: "Parish Church 1866-8 [...] Fine C15 font, tall octagonal stem with pinnacles at the corners and canopied niches with signs of the four Evangelists and four small figures; the octagonal bowl has panels with the Seven Sacrements and the Martyrdom of St Andrew."
