There are two entries for Bugh [-next-Aylsham] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TG2125/burgh-next-aylsham/] [accessed 12 April 2023], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church is dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, and was new roofed in 1524, for then Thomas Strutte was buried in it, and gave 10 marks towards the roof [...] The nave, chancel, and south porch are thatched, the tower is square and hath one whole bell and half another". Blomefield (ibid.) names "William Russell" as first recorded rector here, in 1284. The present font here is reported in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848: "the font, which is very handsome, is elaborately scu;ptured with representations of scriptural subjects." One of East Anglia's Seven-sacrament fonts. [NB: not the same font as its contemporary in Aylsham with symbols of the Passion & Evangelists on the bowl panels and heraldic shield(s) on the shaft]. Described in Thomas (1846): "Font. Per[pendicular] panels beaded and charged with seven Romish sacraments; caps., angels clasping books; stem, robed figures on pedestals alternating with Tudor roses and shields parted per pale; at angles of base, birds with expanded wings: plinth has upper step in form of Maltese cross, and a priest's ledge westward--cavity dirty ." Noted in James (1930). Studied in detail in Nichols (1994), who gives the scenes on the basin as: Baptism; Confirmation; Orders; Eucharist ; Adoration; Extreme Unction; Matrimony; Penance. Nichols (ibid.) describes the motifs on the chamfer [starting with the one under the Baptism scene]: soul; shield of trinity; chrismatory; chalice; open scroll; chrismatory; book; birch. Noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1997). Knott [www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/burghnextaylsham/burghnextaylsham.htm] illustrates the separate basin scenes and notes the presence of the symbols of the four Evangelists at the foot of the stem.
