There is an entry for this Brooke [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TM2999/brooke/] [accessed 28 February 2014] and it mentions a church in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church is dedicated to St. Peter, and the rectory was appropriated to the chamberlain of St. Edmund's Bury, a vicarage being settled [...] John Grey Bishop of Norwich appropriated the rectory to the chamberlain, after the decease of Hubert de Brock, rector, saving an honourable support for the vicar, to be assigned by the Bishops of Norwich." [NB: John de Gray (+1214) [www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/11541] [accessed 28 February 2014]]. The present font is noted in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848: "a font elaborately sculptured with emblems of teh seven Roman sacraments." Described in Bond (1908) as a Seven-sacrament font with "remains of rich gilding and varied colouring" still on it; he also identifies a Sanctus bell among the scenes. Illustrated in Cautley (1949). Studied in detail in Nichols (1994), who points out the misplacement of the basin on the base in the pre-19th century reconstruction of the font; she lists the basin scenes in the following order: 1)Baptism; 2)Orders; 3)Matrimony; 4)Eucharist; 5)Confirmation; 6)Penance; 7)Extreme Unction; 8)Crucifixion. Nichols (ibid.) also records the bad defacement of the iconography and the permanence of excellent colour on it. The underbowl has angels holdings scrolls with worn-out inscriptions alternating with others holding, each, a book, a chalice, a chrismatory and a round dish. The pedestal of the base has eight niches, each occupied by a figure standing on a ledge or platform; the lower base is slightly wider and also octagonal. Pevsner & Wilson (1999) note: "Money was left for it [i.e., the font] in 1466 and 1468, and they mention "an odd little model of the same font made, according to tradition, in Italy in 1850". The 15th-century font is fully illustrated in Knott (2006).
