There are two entries for Binham in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TF9839/binham/] [accessed 10 December 2013], neither of which mentions a cleric or church in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "Peter, the lord, and Albreda his wife, founded here, with the consent of the Conqueror, a priory of Benedictine monks, dedicated to St. Mary, as a cell to the abbey of St. Albans, but to be subject only, as the priory of Lewes was, to that of St. Peter of Clugni, in France, and paying only to St. Albans a mark of silver annually; but not finished till the beginning of the reign of King Henry I." Blomefield (ibid.) notes: "Osgod was prior in 1106 [...] The Church was dedicated to the Holy Cross, the rectory [...] was appropriated to the priory [...] In 1310, Alan Alam was instituted vicar, presented by the prior of Binham". The present baptismal font here is noted in Gough (1792): "The font at Bingham abbey, Norfolk, is octagon adorned with Saints and the Seven Sacraments." In Fryer (?). In F. C. Husenbeth (1858) On Sacramental Fonts in Norfolk, Journal of theBritish Archaeological Association, 14:1, 51-56 [https://doi.org/10.1080/00681288.1858.11887028] [accessed 12 April 2023]. In Fryer (1910). In Cautley (1949). Studied in Nichols (1994), who wonders whether the "consistent discrepancies in Fryer's count of f[i]g[ure]s raise question of possible restoration of the font during renovations in 1935". Nichols (ibid.) notes the order of the scenes thus: 1)Baptism; 2)Orders; 3)Eucharist; 4)Baptism of Christ; 5)Extreme Unction; 6)Confirmation; 7)Penance; 8)Matrimony. Nichols (ibid.) futher notes that the symbols decorating the underbowl chamfer [order corresponds to the sacramental scenes on the basin sides]: candle, chrismatory, chalice, circlet with angle's robe, winding sheet, crown, stock of birch and fretted instrument, are badly damaged, and dates the font to the third quarter of the 15th century. The guide from the Binham Parochial Church (1991) reads: "A good example of an East Anglian Seven Sacrament font, octogonal, with sculptured panels of the sacraments, in the perpendicular style". Octagonal bowl with very regular square sides separated by round plain columns; the sacramental scenes are carved within a frame that adds depth to the scenes; each corresponding side of the underbowl is also richly carved as are the sides of the base (octagonal too) which include standing figures; the bottom of the base continues the motif of the columns which separate the eight faces of bowl and base; the font rests on two wide plinths (also octagonal), the sides of the first adorned with windows and crosses in bas-relief [description from photographs in guide Binham Parochial Church, 1991]. In Pevsner & Wilson (1997): "Octagonal, Perp[endicular], on two steps. The upper step with panel and quatrefoil decoration. Statuettes against the stem under ogee niches, the Seven Sacraments against the bowl and the Trinity." Fully illustrated in Knott (2004).
