Baptismal font of the Gothic period listed and illustrated in López de Guereñu [https://photo.araba.eus/s/photoaraba/item/65981] [accessed 2 August 2024]: "Pila bautismal de la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Torre en el Condado de Treviño. Vista frontal de una pila bautismal gótica. La taza es octogonal y se decora con florones, castillos y leones de clara influencia oriental. El pie es octogonal y lleva semicolumnas adosadas". Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1994) as a Gothic baptismal font of the 13th century [although it is also included in Bilbao's later work (1996: 294 etc.) on Romanesque fonts]; the panels of the side of the octagonal basin are ornamented with: a three-tower-and-three-door fortress [strangely organic looking], a lion passant-gardant, passant to left, another tower like the one before the lion, a stylised 6-petal floral motif, and another such; the panels of the octagonal underbowl contain stylised floral motifs, among them a fleur-de-lis, three 6-petal and one 8-petal floral motifs; the base consists of an octagonal pedestal with constructional columns at every other angle, i.e., four in total. Bilbao (ibid.) cites entries in the Catálogo Monumental de la Diócesis de Vitoria and in Portilla, and remarks on a strong Oriental influence on the style of ornamentation. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 11 June 2021] notes: "La Asunción de Nuestra Señora es la titular de su iglesia [...] El ábside es rectangular con contrafuertes en esquinas, con un ventanal románico de medio punto cegado [...] La pila bautismal es gótica del siglo XIII, octogonal, bellamente decorada con pie también octogonal". Though not mentioned in any of the above sources one side of the basin, both side and underbowl are totally plain; it is not clear whether that was so originally or its decoration was removed. The upper rim of the basin retains a metal staple from an old cover but there is no cover present now [October 2015; June 2021].
