Church Notes: of the original Romanesque church only the south portal remains; present church 16thC church; modified 17thC
Described in Bilbao (1996) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period [cf. infra]. Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ) [https://www.romanicodigital.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/files/burgos_SOTRESGUDO.pdf] [accessed 6 April 2023] as a baptismal font of the early Gothic period [cf. supra]; the hemispherical basin has ribbed pattern all around, with carved band simulating an iron brace studded with nails towards its middle, as if the basin were made of wood staves held by a metal hoop; the four angles of the lower base are decorated with ball motifs [="En el interior, a los pies de la nave, se conserva una pila bautismal de 137 cm de diámetro × 87 de altura, formada por una basa decorada con bolas en las esquinas y una copa gallonada abrazada a media altura por una cenefa con puntas de clavo. La labra a trinchante que presenta la pieza evidencia una factura tardía, de progenie ya gótica." The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 31 July 2021] notes: "iglesia, dedicada a San Miguel Arcángel, renacentista [...] La portada esrománica, con arco de medio punto [...] La pila es románica, de vaso, con avenerados exteriores y anillo y base cuadrada con cabezas". [NB: Bilbao (ibid.) actually identifies the lower base objects as animal heads, and she is right at least in one case of the four; it is hard to say what the others are, resembling rather the magnification of an insect's eye ball -- Nebreda Perdiguero [cf. supra] describes the motifs simply as heads [="cabezas"]]. There is no cover present but the metal staples for an older cover have split the stone of the upper rim at both ends.
