Church Notes: 9-11thC Mudéjar church of Santa María de Retortillo from the former monastery of Santa María de Retortillo documented mid-11thC; the monastery farm ["granja"] maintained the monastic life in it until the 13thC when it is abandoned; secularised and sold in the 16thC; bought in 20thC by the Sánchez Junco family [founder and owner of HOLA magazine]
Font Notes:
Baptismal font consisting of a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with a blind arcade of round arches raised on columns with well-defined capitals and bases, a palmette in each spandrel; the basin rim is a rope moulding, somwhat worn now, and there is a band of beaded tape just below it; the round lower base is decorated with a double moulding. In earlier photographs the font appears raised on a second lower base, round at the top and square below, with a single ornament at each angle, but by 2012 the font appears resting directly on the ground, without the additional lower base. The wooden cover, round, flat and plain, is modern.
