Century and Period: 12th - 13th century [basin only], Medieval [composite]
Church Notes: 9th-11thC Mudéjar church of Santa María de Retortillo from the former monastery of Santa María de Retortillo documented mid-11thC; the monastery farm ["granja"] maintained the monastic life in it until the 13thC when it is abandoned; secularised and sold in the 16thC; bought in 20thC by the Sánchez Junco family [founder and owner of HOLA magazine]
Described and partially illustrated in Bilbao (1996) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period; the basin sides are partitioned vertically and contain a number of uncommon motifs: a two-handle jug, a beaker-like container, an "ancrée" cross, a Latin cross, three epigraphic symbols, a round-bellied vial, a saltire motif like a St Andrew's cross, another beaker and a strange motif with three arrows on it. Modern lower base. Bilbao (ibid.) mentions that this font has been heavily restored; it was acquired by the Sánchez Junco family [founders & owners of HOLA magazine] in the late 1970s, and it is believed to be originally from the area around León capital; the font had been used as a washing tub and had lost its upper rim. Noted in Valle Barreda (2009). [NB: there is another baptismal font in this church, kept inside, at the west end, that is originally from Barriosuso. The upper rim shows damage where one of the metal staples of an old cover has split the stone; no cover present now. The entry for this font Románico Digital [www.romanicodigital.com/cedar/pila-bautismal-9994.aspx] [accessed 24 April 2017] indicates that this font was originally from the Iglesia de San Pelayo in Barriosuso, in the municipality of Santibáñez del Val ["Edificio de Procedencia: Iglesia de San Pelayo -- Localidad de Procedencia: Barriosuso -- Municipio de Procedencia: Santibáñez del Val"] -- cf. Index entry for Santa Maria del Retortillo No. 2]
