Font Notes:
Listed in Pérez Carmona (1974). Described in Bilbao (1996) as a Romanesque baptismal font [NB: the inner concave ribbed pattern would suggest an early-Gthic dating]. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 29 January 2021] notes: "La pila es románica, decorada con gallones, avenerada por dentro, con anillo." The Enciclopedia… (ibid.) notes that the linked-circles interlace pattern appears on the fonts at Basconcillos del Tozo, Arcillares del Tozo, Boada de Villadiego, Villahizán de Treviño, La Piedra, Tagarrosa, Ordejón de Abajo and Pedrosa de Valdelucio. The web site www.sandovaldelareina.com/Ermita_de_Castrorrubio/pila-bautismal-castrorrubio.html [accessed 15 June 2016] informs: the baptismal font in the Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro, Sandoval de la Reina, is originally from the Ermita da San Martin, in nearby Castro Rubio [aka Castrorrubio, Castrottoyo, etc.]; it was brought over from the abandoned hamlet ca. 1891 by Cecilio Martinez Gonzalez on an ox-cart; the font was installed in the Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro and the first person baptised after the installation was Emiliano Pérez González, born 8 August 1891. No information avalable on the original font of San Pedro's. The font consists of a round basin with tapering sides decorated with ribbed pattern on the outside and concave ribbed pattern on the inside; also on the outside, and overimposed on the ribs, is a band of linked-rings interlace; there are two metal staples of the old cover at the moulded upper rim; raised on a squat round moulded base.
