design element - patterns - ribbed - diagonal

Scene Description: this font has obviously had an eventful life with a lonh sejour in all weathers; the surface is badly eroded to a point that the ribbed pattern is almost worn off; damages to the upper rim suggest the stone was split by expanding metal staples; some of the knobs of the lower base corners are broken off or damaged

Described in Bilbao (1996) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period. Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ) [https://www.romanicodigital.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/files/burgos_SAN_MAMÉS_DE_ABAR.pdf] [accessed 4 April 2023] as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period, probably of the second quarter of the 13th century: "pila bautismal del mismo momento, formada por una basa con garras y bolas sobre la que apoya con una copa de 102 cm de diámetro × 53 de altura, decorada con una cenefa de entrelazo." The basin is round with tapering sides that are decorated with a shallow-carved band of round arch-heads under the upper rim, whereas the broad band of braided interlace below is deeply-carved; at the underbowl is band of cusped (?) pattern; raised on a plain short cylidrical stem, and a moulded lower base with ball and claw motifs. Noted in Valle Barreda (2009). The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 4 April 2023] notes: "La pila es románica con anillo de aros entrelazados, pie cilíndrico y base cuadrada". No cover present but upper rim shows damage consistent with the stone being split by metal staples.
