Scene Description: the notch broken off the upper rim is clearly visible here; it appears to have been caused by the splitting of the stone caused by an old metal staple in it, a common happening in stone fonts with metal staples in them

Described in Bilbao (1996) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period. García Guinea (2004) states that this font is one of two [the other at Montorio] that were made after the font at Terradillos de Sedano. GG mentions the dates of 1211 and 1214 for the two fonts ["Pila bautismal [...] modelo de otras (Montorio y San Andrés) ambas firmadas por un mismo maestro DOMINGO DE TERRADILLOS, datadas en 1211 y 1214"] [cf. Index entries for Terradillos de Sedano No. 1 and Montorio]. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 28 January 2021] notes: "La pila es románica fechada en 1214". Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ) [https://www.romanicodigital.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/files/burgos_SAN_ANDRÉS_DE_MONTEARADOS.pdf] [accessed 4 April 2023] as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period [no measurements given]. An inscription on the font identifies it as the work of Domingo de Terradillos and gives the date as Era 1252 [i.e., 1214 A.D.] The font consists of hemispherical basin with plain sides, the underbowl is decorated with elegant foliage and tiny rosettes sprouting out of a roll moulding; the cylindrical stem upper base is decorated with palm (?) leaves; the lower base has a partially legible inscription over scallop motif stating probably [part of the inscription is missing] the name of the master, Domingo de Terradillos, maker of the Montorio font as well [cf. Index entry for Montorio]; below those, the lower base is moulded. There is damage to the sides of the basin, and some more noticeable at the upper rim, where the staples of the old cover have broken the stone. The wooden font cover is round, flat and plain; modern. The font resides in an alcove at the west end of the nave, beneath the west gallery. [cf. BSI entry San Andres de Montearados No. 2 for a second medieval font in this church]
