Church Notes: this church is no longer used for the cult now [October 2013] and serves as a centre for the interpretation of nature -- services are held at the other church in town, Santa Maria [cf. Index entry for Neila No.2]
Described in Bilbao (1996) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period; the large basin is decorated with vegetal vine bearing tendrils and fruit around the sides; below, seven bands of over-imposed leaves forming a scalloped pattern; the centre ring is a roll moulding ornamented with palmettes; below are several ring mouldings, beaded tape and a set of bands of foliage in zig-zag form; the lower base has a fat coiled snake with the head resting on its tail. Bilbao (1996) suggests the font at Hacinas as the work of the same master. Garma Ramirez [www.arteguias.com/burgos/neila-burgos.htm] suggests both Hacinas (Burgos prov.) and Ledesma de la Cogolla (La Rioja) as cognates. Noted and illustrated in the entry for this church in the Enciclopedia del románico [https://www.romanicodigital.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/files/burgos_NEILA.pdf] [accessed 28 March 2023] notes: "conserva el edificio un magnífico ejemplar de pila bautismal románica, de copa semiesférica sobre tenante circular, todo profusamente ornamentado. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 27 March 2023] reports two churches here, corresponding to the two 'barrios', of which one, Santa Maria, remains as the parish church: "Estaba compuesto por dos barrios con dos iglesias. [NB: another font of the same period is listed in this Index as Neila No. 2 for the church of Santa María].
