Church Notes: present church mid-16thC; modified mid-17thC -- the original medieval church here is now a rural chapel, the Ermita de la Virgen del Camino
Described in Bilbao (1996). Noted and illustrated in Valle Barreda (2009) with suggested date in the mid-12th century. Baptismal font of the late-Romanesque period; the basin is ornamented with an arcade with varied motifs in the spandrels; above, a band with beaded-tape and rope motif ornamentation; the base is decorated with round arches; there is large areas of damage at opposite sides of the basin, with considerable loss of stone; there are two metal staples still inserted in the upper rim. No cover present. / PET(r)US ME FECIT. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 23 March 2023] notes: "iglesia dedicada a San Martín, obispo. Damage visible at opposite ends of the upper rim, probably related to old cover staples. The medieval parish church may have become a 'ermita' [chapel] when the larger church was built here in the mid-16th century; the medieval font is therefore likely to have belonged originally to the older church; the old chapel was demolished in the 1960s, but re-built on another site further from the village centre in 2006.
