Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1996). Described and illustrated in Valle Barreda (2009) who mentions a disappeared lion from the base. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 23 March 2023] notes: "San Miguel Arcángel [...] On-site notes: one of the very interesting figural fonts of the Burgos-Palencia region. The font, probably of the late 12th or early 13th century, consists of a large hemispherical basin with a short circular base and a round lower base or plinth; the upper part of the basin side has a stylised acanthus vine; below it, a scene with Adam and Eve in Paradise, next to a fruit-laden apple tree on which writhes a serpent; St. Peter with his key stands next to an enormous fish depicted vertically; a smith; a woman holding a hen; a woman with a rhomboid drum; a pair of children hug and hold a round drum; a musician plays the bagpipes; woman dancing; man plays the "vihuela de arco" [old guitar-like string instrument played with a bow]; a musician with psaltery (?); St. Joseph with three pigeons in his hands; Madonna and Child, his hand raised in benediction; Simon holding the child Christ; 14 animal or monstrous masks are placed in the spaces between the figures. There is no cover present but there are two metal staples from an old cover in the upper rim, and evidence there of damage caused by a metal staple splitting the stone.
