Scene Description: with very large leaves, all around -- the metal cinch appears to have been installed with a dual purpose: to reinforce the fragile basin and to provide anchorage for an old font cover that is no longer in place.

Font Notes:
Described in Bilbao (1996). Noted and illustrated in Valle Barreda (2009) who dates it to ca. 1200 and gives the fonts at Neila and Barbadillo de los Herreros as cognates. Noted and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del Románico en Castilla y León. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 21 March 2023] notes: "iglesia, dedicada a Santa Cristina, virgen y mártir, renacentista […] La pila es románica con decoración de flores de lis y fuste cilíndrico" [no mention of the inscription]. Hemispherical basin, with concave ribs on the inside; on the outside, below the rim, a vine with large leaves; an inscription below, practically illegible now; large leaves on the underbowl; raised on a moulded circular pedestal base decorated with more foliage. A metal ring all around just below the rim of the basin is probably there as reinforcement, though it appears to have loops for the securing of the cover. There is a stone holy-water stoup by the south entranceway, possibly medieval. [NB: the concave-rib pattern in the inner basin suggests a later date than usually assigned, probably late-13th or even 14th century.
