Described in Bilbao (1996: 256, 279-280) as an object used until recently as a baptismal font; the rather crude bowl has a squence of symbols on the upper part: Greek cross, 2 fleur-de-lys, 5-point star and an encircled 6-petal flower; next to these, as Bilbao points out, a disconcerting epigraphic sequence, neither Latin nor Greek, nor are the characters Iberian or Arabic, although some resemblance to either has been noted. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 19 December 2021] notes: "iglesia [...] dedicada a Santiago Apóstol [...] una de las poquísimas iglesias de la provincia que tienen la torre redonda", but does not mention its font. No entry found for Gijano in the Enciclopedia del románico. No cover present. The font was located in the northwest corner of the nave but it is now December 2021 in the chancel, north side.
