Church Notes: church of late-13thC(?)
Described in Bilbao (1996) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period. Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ); the basin is ribbed inside and out; the outer side has lobes at the upper rim, then arch-heads over the broad ribs; the base has three lion half-bodies holding ball motifs in their claws; one other may be lacking; between the lions slithers a snake. There are two metal staples from the old cover at the upper rim [="En el fondo de su nave meridional se conserva un bello ejemplar de pila bautismal, de traza románica aunque con marcas de talla a trinchante, hecho que parece indicar una cronología avanzada dentro del siglo XIII. Su copa es semiesférica, de 124 cm de diámetro y 66 cm de altura, interiormente gallonada y el frente ornado con un borde superior de lóbulos y sucesión de arquillos de los que parten gallones. Apoya la pila en un basamento moldurado de 27 cm de altura, con dos toros y una escocia con decoración de retícula, tres leones representados con su cuartos delanteros que apoyan sus patas en bolas y una tosca serpiente enroscada entre sus patas. El carácter maligno de la serpiente, a veces sustituida por un dragón, es frecuentemente utilizado en la decoración de las pilas bautismales como signo de la victoria y liberación del pecado que para el cristiano supone el bautismo. Gráficamente el león suele también ser el animal que simboliza este triunfo. En la pila de Fuencivil el carácter estático de los leones contrasta con los más numerosos ejemplos en los que se manifiesta la lucha entre felino y reptil, caso de las pilas bautismales burgalesas de Bañuelos del Rudrón, Villegas y La Piedra, o de los ejemplares palentinos de Valcobero y Cantoral de la Peña, donde es el milites cristiano quien lucha contra una gran serpiente alada. En otros casos, como las pilas de Amaya, Cuevas de San Clemente o Rebolledo de Traspeña, sólo aparece la serpiente enroscada en la base de la pila."
