Described in Bilbao (1996) as a quadrangular font reminiscent of a sepulchre [!] García de Castro Valdés (2000) notes medieval quadrangular fonts in Spain at Beloncio, Bullaso, San Isidoro de Leon, Villanueva de Valdecarzana (suggested date in the 11th century); Armentia, Bustasur, Dosante, Gormaz, Quintanillabon, Rosales, Santillan del Agua, Soto de Bureba (suggested date in the 12th or 13th century); Ripodas and Turrillas (suggested date in the 13th century). Described in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ); quadrangular basin decorated with a rope moulding and a potent cross inscribed in a circle: "Junto al altar mayor se conserva una pila bautismal de forma ligeramente rectangular (97 ×80 × 58 cm) decorada con una moldura sogueada y con una cruz patada inscrita en un círculo." No cover present; the base of the font is probably modern. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed 16 March 2023] notes a neo-Romanesque font here: "la pila bautismal es neo-románica, cuadrada y en forma de pirámide invertida y tiene sogueado en el borde y molduras y cruz en relieve." [NB: there is an object of interest by the side of the font [cf. ImagesArea]; it is of stone and roughly hemispherical, hollow on the inside, a circular inner basin; the outside is decorated, the sides with an arcade, the arches supported on torsade coulmns; in the arches there is at least one scene, and in others there are human figures interacting; the upper rim appears to have an incised inscription; the under bowl has diagonal incisions all around -- was the object used as holy-water stoup? as planter? not entered in the Index]
