[NB: the quadruped could well be a lion -notice the tail- and the scene that of Androcles extracting a thorn from the lion's paw instead of that of Samson fighting the lion]

Church Notes: Romanesque church (mid-12thC?) re-built 16thC
Listed in Pérez Carmona (1974) and in Guerra (1986 c1978) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period. Described in Bilbao (1996) both as a cylindrical (p. 53) and a dodecagonal (p. 273) baptismal font of the Romanesque period, ornamented with an arcade in which are contained several figures and motifs (partially destroyed sacerdotal figures, a male figure with a book in his hands, a bishop with mitre and staff, a Latin pattée cross, a badly eroded figure, another such); the font rests directly on a thick plinth. The entry for this church in the Enciclopedia del románico
On-site notes: the basin is actually dodecagonal, although much of the angularity of the polygon has become rounded or has simply broken off, such is the poor state of repair of this font; there is an arcade of round arches on columnat supports all around the visible part of the font [NB: practically half of the font is jammed against the corner beneath the west gallery, its carving, if any, invisible now; the arches of the arcade house [L-->R] a cleric with a book, a mitred bishop, a processional cross, a human head; the rest of the arches may have contained other details but are now damaged; below the figures mentioned above is an area where the font has lost most of the carving detail but their lower vestments and their feet are still visible; a metal staple from an old cover is still evident in the upper rim but there is no cover present. The font has been re-located from its original position beneath the west gallery to the east end, near the altar. It is unfortunate that the now invisible sides were not recorded before the move.
